Revision follows national trend to increase library use and access
SHOW LOW, Ariz. (December 5, 2018) – Overdue materials from Show Low Public Library will no longer be subject to late fees beginning Friday, Dec. 7. The Show Low City Council approved eliminating fees for overdue materials, including books, magazines, music, audiobooks, children’s items, movies, board and video games, electronic devices and equipment, at its meeting on Nov. 6. This revision applies only to materials owned by Show Low Public Library. It does not eliminate any fees for interlibrary loans, for damaged library materials or for lost library materials, which are items kept longer than 120 days.
This change in practice follows a growing national trend. Hundreds of libraries across the United States have eliminated overdue fees, some for the last ten years, resulting in an increase in circulation and a higher return rate of materials. Eliminating fees promotes greater goodwill, encourages literacy, supports learning opportunities and removes barriers to library access, especially for low-income families.
