The SLAC offers classes to the community in such areas as Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Jr. Lifeguarding, 1st Aid and Safety, CPR, Babysitting  and more.  These classes happen throughout the year with a majority of them being between the months of April through August.  Keep checking back because these classes will change on a regular basis.  Our upcoming classes are found below:


Lifeguard Training
Successful completion of this class will enable participant to become certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. Some of the courses key features include:
  • Complete skills instruction including: equipment-based rescues, spinal injury management, post rescue care and more - all incorporating the most current principles of aquatic safety.
  • Professional lifeguard responsibilities - training you'll need both in and around the pool, including: interaction with the public (including patrons with disabilities, cultural diversity, handling violence); responsibilities as a professional rescuer; your role as part of the facility safety team; and more.
  • First aid training and CPR for the professional rescuer - including AED training, Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission.

Prerequisites for this course include:

  • Be 15 years old by the end of the course
  • Swim 500 yards continuously (200 yards crawl, 100 yards breastroke, and 200 yards mixture of crawl and breastroke)
  • Submerge to a minimum of 7 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, and return with it to the surface.
When: April 28, 30,
May 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10
Time: 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm (weekdays)
8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Saturdays)
Cost: $50 (no cost if you are hired by the city as a Lifeguard)
Registration: Registration can be done either in person at the aquatic center, over the phone using a credit card, or ONLINE!

WSI - Water Safety Instructor
Successful completion of this course will enable participants to become certified to teach American Red Cross swimming lessons.  The prerequisites of this course are:
  • Be at least 17 years of age by the end of the course
  • Pass a pre-course evaluation consisting of:
  • Water safety skills and knowledge consistent with information taught in the ARC Community Water Safety course.
  • Ability to demonstrate these swimming strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breastroke and sidestroke.
  • Ability to retrieve object from the bottom of the pool.
When: June 2-7, 9-13
Time: 9:00 - 12:00 pm (weekdays)  9:00 - 12:00 pm (Saturdays)
Cost: $50 (no cost if you are hired by the city)

Camp Extreme / Jr. Lifeguard
This year our Jr. Lifeguard program will take on a new twist.  Instead of boring classroom lectures and lap swimming, we will be adding adventurous outings for fun and excitement.  This will be more of a two-week summer camp than our Jr. Lifeguard program of the past.  Some of the activities will include learning Jr. Lifeguarding skills and water safety techniques, canoeing, snorkeling, conditioning, hiking, orienteering, mountain bike riding, and more!!  Each participant will receive a Camp Extreme t-shirt and will be allowed to volunteer their time as a Jr. Lifeguard at the SLAC once the camp is over.  The camp will be held on weekdays for two weeks.  For more information, contact the aquatic center.
