SHOW LOW, Ariz. (November 9, 2016) – On Nov. 8 at approximately 12:30 p.m., Show Low police officers responded to a disturbance call in the 400 block of W. Deuce of Clubs. When officers arrived, they made contact with a subject later identified as Daniel Erickson. A confrontation ensued in which the suspect pulled a gun and shot Officer Darrin Reed. Erickson fled the scene and Officer Reed was transported to Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Erickson was later located at Lake of the Woods in Lakeside where he barricaded himself inside a cabin with a hostage, a 15-year-old female. Members of the White Mountain Special Response Team and area law enforcement officers surrounded the suspect and began negotiations. Arizona Department of Public Safety’s SWAT was called and, on their arrival, took over the scene. During approximately six-and-a-half hours of negotiations with Erickson, he sporadically shot at officers. The standoff ended when officers finally returned fire and killed Erickson. The hostage was safely recovered and taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Officer Reed was 50 years old and had been with the Show Low Police Department since 2006. Prior to that, he was with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office. Officer Reed is survived by his wife, son and daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with them following this tragic incident.
Thank you to everyone who has expressed their concern and shown their support. Officer Reed was not only a husband, a father and a police officer, he was a member of our community who will be sorely missed.
