Classes open to women and girls, ages 13+
Show Low, AZ (April 14, 2017) – Girls and women (13 years of age and older) regardless of age, size or physical ability, can learn to defend themselves against sexual assault through a 16-session course designed especially for women. The training course, called Women-Empowered Self-Defense, will be held Mondays and Wednesdays (except holidays) from 6 to 7 p.m. at Show Low High School, 120 N. Cougar Lane, beginning Monday, May 1. Instructor Justin Harris will teach students how to counter the most common attack strategies, use leverage-based techniques to escape larger and stronger opponents, develop a mindset to avoid being attacked altogether by learning to be less of a target, and become comfortable in worst-case scenarios.
The 16 sessions include a combination of lectures and hands-on training using a partner. Registration fee is $160 per person or $220 for partners, with a class limit of 14 students. It is recommended that participants read the syllabus before registering at Show Low City Hall’s recreation desk, 180 N. 9th Street, or Show Low Family Aquatic Center, 1100 W. Deuce of Clubs.
